A Short Guide To Cellardyke, Fife
The East Neuk of Fife is one of my favourite places in Scotland. And if you’re exploring along the Fife coast then you’ll want to visit the pretty harbour hamlet of Cellardyke.
A fishing village in miniature, Cellardyke is defined by a charming seaside vibe.
Its narrow main street, shaded alleyways, and rows of cottages lead to an idyllic harbour and a series of panoramic viewpoints over the water. Take in views of the sparkling Firth of Forth from the harbour walls - be sure to take your camera and capture the distinctive pantile-orange roofs the East Neuk is so famous for.
Cellardyke is a tiny village and the best things to do here are undoubtedly by the sea. From the harbour, follow the coastal path signs to the Cellardyke tidal pool. This is the best place to enjoy the water whether it’s a swim or SUP. Or relax on the rocks and watch out for the local dolphin pod.
if you’re visiting Cellardyke on a Fife road trip, you’ll likely only need a few hours to explore. But the slow pace of life, coastal views, and picturesque harbour are well worth a visit.
Combine your trip to Cellardyke with a visit to the pretty East Neuk villages like pretty Pittenweem and harbour haven Crail.
My top Cellardyke Hotels
Being so small, there’s no hotels in Cellardyke. Instead I’d recommend staying in neighbouring Anstruther. My top picks are:
The Waterfront: for beautiful rooms and views over the marina.
The Bank: for spacious rooms in the town centre.
Fisherman’s Neuk: for a self-catering experience with stunning interiors.
Where to eat in Cellardyke
You’ll find one of Fife’s best coffee stops in Cellardyke, in the form of incredibly unique Grind Cafe. A converted airstream by the sea, this is the perfect place to enjoy a delicious coffee, breakfast, or, lunch, and of course those gorgeous coastal views. It’s especially magical on a summer’s morning as the sun rises and the local dog walkers stop for their morning coffee.
For dinner, head back to one of Anstruther’s incredible restaurants. From my previous trips, I recommend The Dreel Tavern; a cosy restaurant serving exceptional food.
Where is Cellardyke?
You’ll find Cellardyke in the charming East Neuk of Fife, on Scotland’s east coast.
The region is known for its picturesque harbour villages and is a popular area for walking, SUP’ing, and other outdoor activities.
Cellardyke is a tiny hamlet and neighbours the much bigger town of Anstruther, which is just a 10-minute walk along the coastal path. The closest city is Edinburgh, which makes Cellardyke, along with its sister harbour villages, the perfect day trip.
How to get to Cellardyke
By car
Much like the rest of the Fife coast, the easiest way to get to Cellardyke is by car. If you don’t have your own vehicle, then rent a car in Edinburgh - from Edinburgh it’s only a 1.5-hour journey, although you’ll most definitely want to explore the rest of the pretty East Neuk as your drive along the coast. I use Rentalcars.com and Discover Cars for the best car rental in Scotland.
As Cellardyke is not as busy as other East Neuk villages, parking is generally easier to find amongst the side streets. But for a guaranteed space, I’d recommend the beach car park (here). Or from a much larger official car park in Anstruther, a 10-minute walk away.
By bus
If you’re looking for public transport, then the Stagecoach X60 to Anstruther is your best option. The journey takes around 3-hours, plus a short 10-minute walk from Anstruther to Cellardyke.
On foot
Or visit Cellardyke on your walk along spectacular Fife Coastal Path. Cellardyke is the perfect place to stop and enjoy a coffee by the coast as you walk from the nearby harbour villages of Pittenweem or Crail.
